Recently in my course I have been doing life drawing, and I would like to express how helpful it is to young people in any sort of artistic industry, whether it be fashion design, product design or fine arts, even in an architectual field it would be useful to understand movement and line. My tutorer often says that drawing is simply any type of markmaking. And that to draw a line it must have relevance to the next line, and the next.
This is where life drawing is usuful as you are forced to take the most important part of the figure and draw it with realistic accuracy.
Just yesterday we had 30 seconds to draw our model and she took the time to go into some dynamic poses to help us figure out movement and angles. I must tell you all how important it is, as an artist of any type, to take classes like these. It really gives you an idea of how people look, and with realism and believablity becoming more and more poplular, especially in my field of concept and character design, it is extremely helpful.
A lot of digital artists I know dislike drawing and sketching, but some of the more experienced digital artists of our time, and even comic book artists will tell you how important taking up a drawing class is. It helps you with your basic knowledge and skills, and really helps you grasp the perspective and proportions of the human body. I already find myself improving, getting a good grasp on what the human body is supposed to look like.
...So those fake comic heros and even those heavily photoshopped photographs, numerous paintings and even ones I have done which I now realise are inaccurately painted. Look at a person and go, "Yes, they have a big belly, or yes they have gangly legs or a big nose," or I dunno, whatever!
Adding imperfections to any person you paint with make them look realistic as no one is perfect looking unless of course you have had a tonne of plastic surgery, and then (no offense) you would go under my fake catagory.
So, take drawing classes, they help a lot!!!
I will be putting up another few images soon, but IM moving town so they might be a week or so away
